Following Ravilious - Newhaven Views was a free public art trail of giant billboards, placed around Newhaven.
Paintings of the town by Eric Ravilious from the 1930’s sat alongside a new work each from contemporary artists; Emily Allchurch, Jo Lamb, Charlie Prodger, and Mark Titchner, their responses inspired by Ravilious and the modern Newhaven landscape.
We were commissioned by Towner Eastbourne to create a brand identity for Following Ravilious that was bright, engaging and appealed to all members of the public; whether they had a regular interest in art or not. We wanted the design to be recognisable, but not imposing on the artworks, the green used across print and digital complements the earthy orange tones of Ravilious' work.
For the digital roll out of the public art trail, we created Canva templates for the Creative Newhaven team. The templates, alongside assigned brand colours and fonts enabled them to produce and post branded communications autonomously.
As part of the public art trail we designed interpretation boards using the identity's bright green, making a recognisable point of reference throughout the town. They included a QR code which linked directly to the creative newhaven website and more information about each artwork.
We also design a series of floor vinyls acted as both way finding and promotion of the art trail. Each panel was designed specifically for its location with the directions changing to guide users to the different artworks.
A key part of this project was the trail map, a piece of free informative print that would be distributed across East Sussex.
We created a custom map that was both beautiful and informative; providing the public with the locations of the artworks, how to find them and other key local spots.
The map is A3 with a map fold down to A6 to fit nicely in your pocket, and was printed locally on a recycled stock.
‘Two Pens created a visual identity for our 2023 public art trail ‘Following Ravilious – Newhaven Views’ which elegantly transmitted the combination of Ravilious’s muted mark making and the varied contemporary artist responses. The practical application to a fold-out map, signage and digital assets was handled with care and subtlety and the work was all produced on time, budget and with a sense of fun that is typical of the team. On to the next project!'
